The Boogeyman

"Give me your candy," Rex said and cracked his knuckles to show that he meant business.

"You can't have it," Helen said. "We earned it fair and square."

"Yeah," said Jason, braver than normal because a girl just stood up against Rex. "If you want candy, put on a costume and go trick or treating yourself."

"Shut up, Puckerman," Rex said. "Your girlfriend scares me more than you do."

Jason bit his lip, but didn't say anything. Rex had beaten him up a few times already, and the last thing he wanted was to get a whipping in front of the girl he liked.

"Right," said Rex. "Now give me your candy. I won't ask again."

"Don't you know it's bad luck to steal candy from trick or treaters on Halloween?"

"I don't believe in bad luck," Rex sneered.

"Well, you should," Helen said. "It's believed that if you steal candy from trick or treaters on Halloween, that the Boogeyman will come and get you."

"The Boogeyman?" Rex said and laughed out loud. "That's the most pathetic thing I've ever heard."

"Didn't you hear about what happened to Peter last year? He disappeared, never to be seen again."

Rex laughed again. "Peter's parents left town overnight. They took him with them. There's no curse or Boogeyman behind it. Now... give me the candy, or I'll have your boyfriend eat a knuckle sandwich, understand?"

Helen took a step forward, but Jason held her back. "It's okay," he said and handed the candy to Rex. "Here," he said. "Take it."

Rex snatched the bag from Jason and then punched the boy in the solar plexus, leaving him coughing and wheezing on the sidewalk. "So long, sucker," she called out as he ran away down the street.

"Jason," Helen said and knelt down next to him. "Are you okay?"

Jason held up his hand. "I... I'm fine," he said and took a few deep breaths before he got up. "Let him enjoy his candy before the Boogeyman gets him."

That night, after eating all the candy he stole from a few of the neighborhood kids, Rex got into bed and was soon fast asleep.

BLAM!

Rex shot upright in bed. Lightning flashed and thunder clapped. The wind outside made tree branch scratch against his window. He looked at his bedside alarm clock. It was 3:33 in the morning.

Something moved in the darkness of the room.

"Hello?" Rex called out. "Is anyone there?"

No one answered, but he could see something blacker than the darkness of night moving in his room.

"Mommy?"

The dark shadow within the darkness moved towards his bed.

Rex could feel something get onto the bed, and as lightning flashed, he could see a cloaked figure hunched on his bed. "Mommy!" Rex screamed out, but his scream was nothing than a hoarse whisper.

The figure crawled over his legs and then towered over him.

Rex tried to move, but he couldn't. He tried to scream, but his lips wouldn't respond.

Lightning flashed again, and all he could see was the red eyes and sharp fangs of the creature before it stabbed its sharp, bony fingers into his chest.
